Gaur is an old black man in the heads of my closest friends. In reality, he's a tragic hero, and probably the truly most heroic in the story at this point in time. He has a somewhat frustrating mentor/student and, to a lesser degree, father/son relationship with Kedamono. Gaur does his best to steer Kedamono in the right direction, but often with little or no success. While Kedamono has shown himself to be at times selfish, as most teenagers are, Gaur is entirely selfless, or at least can realize where priortities should lie when it comes to others.
Another key point to Gaur is the value he puts on living things. It can be assumed that he is familiar to some degree with the people living in Yggdrasil area. To live for centuries means watching those people grow up, grow old, then die, while he remains behind. Once they're gone, they're gone; they don't come back. The pain of this extended life in mind, Gaur has taken it upon himself to keep others from having to endure such pain in becoming the World Tree's guardian.
"Gaur" and "The Gaur" are used interchangebly in referring to him. "Gaur" is not his given name. In the case of most superbeasts that have lived as long as he has, he's forgotten his true name. The people living in the area of Yggdrasil gave him his moniker due to his gaur-like fighting force.
